What the Tacitus System gives you
Tacitus is Avalon's double-glazed aluminum frame system for sound-rated openings.
STC 53, rated at Riverbank
Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories rated the Tacitus System at STC 53 under ASTM E90-09 (2016), report RAL-TL21-348, tested November 29, 2021. The tested unit was 47-11/16 inches wide by 95-3/4 inches high, with a 3-5/8 inch air gap between the two glass packs.
Glazing pockets for different glass
The glazing pockets take glass from 1/4 inch up to 5/8 inch. The standard glass bite is 1/4 inch, and 5/8 inch glass is set with a wet seal and the 6752 gasket.
A deep air gap
Any rating over STC 42 uses double glazing with 3-1/2 inches or more of air space. The Tacitus sections hold the two lites 3-1/2 inches apart.
Three throat sizes
Tacitus comes in 5, 5-5/8 and 8-5/8 inch throats, for 4-7/8, 5-1/2 and 8-1/2 inch walls. Each throat is 1/8 inch larger than the wall it fits.
Built for field assembly
Frames ship as knock-down units, with separate head, strike and hinge jambs and snap-on casing, pre-cut and boxed per opening.

For STC 53, Avalon specifies 9/16 inch laminated and 5/8 inch laminated glass, double glazed with 3-1/2 inches or more of air space. The 5/8 inch lite is set with a wet seal and the 6752 gasket. Avalon's STC Frame-Glass Combinations chart lists glass for STC 31 through 59. Any rating over STC 42 uses double glazing with 3-1/2 inches or more of air space, and STC 56 and 59 need an 8-1/2 inch wall (the 8-5/8 inch throat). The chart is on our Resources page.

Glass from 1/4 inch up to 5/8 inch. 5/8 inch glass is set with a wet seal and the 6752 gasket.
Three: a 5 inch throat for a 4-7/8 inch wall, a 5-5/8 inch throat for a 5-1/2 inch wall, and an 8-5/8 inch throat for an 8-1/2 inch wall. STC 56 and 59 need the 8-1/2 inch wall.
There is no universal-throat option for double glazing, so a wall that falls between the Tacitus sizes needs shims or a wall backer, or the frame abuts the wall. Our article on throat size and wall thickness explains the options and the gaps each one needs.
