Fire-rated aluminum frames and doors, 20 to 90 minutes
Phoenix frames are rated for 60 and 90 minutes. Eagle frames are rated up to 45 minutes, and Osprey doors for 20 minutes; both are smoke rated. Send us your ratings, wall thickness and opening sizes.
Rated frames and doors from one supplier
Avalon makes rated aluminum frames for door openings, sidelights, borrowed lights and transoms, and a fire-rated door, Osprey.
Phoenix: 60 and 90 minutes
Phoenix is Avalon's frame for 60 and 90 minute door openings. It ships with steel backing pre-installed, takes throats from 2-1/4 to 16-1/2 inches in 1/8 inch steps, and is available up to 8 feet by 10 feet.
Eagle: up to 45 minutes, smoke rated
Eagle frames are rated up to 45 minutes, which covers any lower rating a project calls for, and they are smoke rated. Every Eagle frame can be rated. Rated sidelights, borrowed lights and transoms are 45 minute, positive pressure. Phoenix is finished and profiled to match Eagle, so rated and non-rated openings on one job look the same.
Osprey: 20 minute door, smoke rated
The Osprey door is rated for 20 minutes and is smoke rated.
Tested and certified
Phoenix frames were tested by Warnock Hersey (test report WHI-495-0695). Fabrication certified by Smith Emery Laboratories (certificate SE-43623-2026, valid through January 1, 2027), which audits Avalon's plant each year.
Rated glass included
We sell each rated opening as an assembly, so the rated glass comes from Avalon along with the frame.
Ready for your hardware
Assembly clips ship with the frames, and the hinge backer is installed at the factory. Any hardware prep can be done on a rated frame, as long as the hardware is rated.
Phoenix and Eagle at a glance
Use Phoenix where a door opening needs 60 or 90 minutes. Use Eagle for openings up to 45 minutes, and for rated sidelights, borrowed lights and transoms. Phoenix frames take either prefinished or unfinished wallboard, and need no field notching of trim and no sill starter or blocking.
Avalon has specialized in interior aluminum frames and doors since 1982. The Phoenix System page has the section details, and the Resources page has the Fire-Rating Certification and the Phoenix and Eagle cut sheets.
Phoenix System - fire-rated aluminum frame
Phoenix frames are rated for 60 and 90 minutes. Eagle frames are rated up to 45 minutes, which covers lower ratings such as 20 or 30 minutes, and they are smoke rated. Osprey doors are rated for 20 minutes and are smoke rated. Rated sidelights, borrowed lights and transoms are 45 minute, positive pressure.
In a 1 hour wall, the IBC calls for a 20 minute door frame and a 45 minute sidelight. A 20 minute sidelight does not meet that requirement, so rated sidelights are 45 minute. Eagle frames are rated up to 45 minutes, which covers both.
Phoenix frames were tested by Warnock Hersey, test report WHI-495-0695. Avalon's cut sheet states that Phoenix meets or exceeds ASTM E-152, UL 10B, NFPA 252, CSFM 43.7, UBC 43.2 and CAN4 S-104 for 90 minute fire-rated assemblies. Fabrication is certified by Smith Emery Laboratories under certificate SE-43623-2026, valid January 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and Smith Emery audits the plant each year. The certificate is on our Resources page.
No. We sell the rated frame and glass as one assembly, so the rated glass comes from Avalon.
Phoenix throats run from 2-1/4 to 16-1/2 inches in 1/8 inch steps, with a 1-1/2 or 2 inch face. Avalon's guide specification sets the throat at the nominal wall thickness plus 1/8 inch. The largest Phoenix frame is 8 feet by 10 feet. Eagle flush glazing fits walls from 3-1/2 to 16-1/2 inches in 1/8 inch steps. Our article on throat size and wall thickness explains how to match a frame to your wall.
Assembly clips ship with the frames. Steel backing and a heavy-duty aluminum hinge backer come installed. Every frame is prepped for 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch hinges and an ANSI strike, needs no extended lip strike, and has a 1 inch stop that takes a parallel arm closer without an added bracket. Any hardware prep can be done on a rated frame as long as the hardware is rated. Common premium preps include heavy weight, electric, 5 inch and SOSS concealed hinges, concealed closers, EPT, electric strikes, concealed overhead stops and flush bolts. Our article on hardware preps has the full list.
